April 10, 20224 min read

Hello again!

If you haven’t already started to clear out your closets and drawers for spring cleaning, I hope that by the end of this, you are ready to tackle those annoying chores that will really refresh your life! The power of decluttering is so astounding, it can absolutely set you on a completely different (and happier) track in life!

ESPECIALLY if you are feeling stuck right now, maybe all you need to do is take on a decluttering challenge… That’s exactly what I did last month and the spring cleaning benefits were absolutely life-changing!!

A Decluttering Challenge

For those of you who don’t know, I am originally from Buffalo, New York. I have moved four times in the past four years! My husband and I are both in the military, so that means a lot of moving, packing, AND bringing a lot of junk from place to place.

But last month, a friend of mine got me to start a decluttering challenge, and it has done so much good in my life!

I didn’t realize just how much I had been putting off all of the organizing, donating, and going through certain drawers and things until this challenge. Basically, the challenge went like this:

  • On day one, I got rid of one thing

  • On day two, I got rid of two things

  • On day three, I got rid of three things

And so forth.

I have been able to get rid of SO MUCH STUFF and donate it to people who need it!

Decluttering Tips

In order to really understand the power of decluttering, here are some tips to help you get started!

  • Ask yourself: “Why am I holding onto these things that I don’t use or need?” Too often, we have so much stuff that we don’t even really know why we still have it! This can really help you separate the things that you actually should hold onto and the things that can be thrown out.

  • Start with something small! Just like the spring cleaning challenge I did, the power of decluttering really can be seen in the little things we can get rid of. Maybe today all you do is go through your junk drawer… But imagine the difference it will make when you can actually find a pen when you need one!

  • Remember your progress. Something I like to do is take pictures of all of the bags I am filling up. It helps me realize just how much I am getting rid of and how good it feels to do so!

What Can I Declutter?

If you need some ideas on where to start, here is a list of places in your home that may need some spring cleaning:

  • Junk drawers

  • Closets

  • Underneath beds

  • Office/filing cabinets

  • Storage totes

  • Pantry

  • Garage or attic space

  • Kids toy bins

  • Bookshelves

  • Your makeup drawer

And many more! In fact, Tidy Revival has an amazing room-by-room list of 102 things you can get rid of in your home to declutter. You could simply choose a room or item each day and check it off the list!

The Power of Decluttering

It feels SO GOOD to declutter and organize the environment we are in. It is literally like getting a breath of fresh air! When you take time to declutter the space you are in, it is literally like spring cleaning for your brain too!
